Library and Book Bank

The College Library came into existence with the college in 1923. The first library was in a small room No.10 in the main building. In 1956 when the Lebeau Auditorium was built, the western end of the ground floor was added to library block to be used as reading room. Later on the entire ground flour came to be used by the library department. The number of volumes as on date is 74,300.

The library has very good collections in the fields of English and Tamil Literature. Some of them are out of print at present. Our library has a good number of reference books like, Encyclopedia Britannica, Encyclopedia Americana, McGraw Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, The New book of Popular Science, Master Plots, Old Dictionaries etc.

WORKING TIME OF THE LIBRARY

Our College Library is open on all working days of the College and Saturdays from 8.00 am to 6.45 pm. During semester holidays the library will be kept open till 4.00 p.m only.

BOOK BANK SYSTEM (UGC)

With the UGC Funds, we started a BOOK BANK SYSTEM in the year 1964. There are 1279 textbooks on various subjects. The poor early birds in each semester can borrow two books for their studies. In this system a student will be permitted to borrow only two books for the period of one semester on payment of Rs.5. for each book.

OPAC ACCESS LIBRARY AUTOMATION

In the year 2001, our college library was modernized with the help of united board (UBACHEA). We really feel very happy to say that St.Xavier’s College library is the only one in our area providing computerized information service to the students and staff. Now the constraints in the library day to day work have been minimized and also the repetition or duplication work avoided.

After this computerization work different kinds of reports can be printed out. Even the list of frequently accessed books during any particular period can also be printed out. Finally this work has given high utility of college library for the students and staff. Research scholars are also getting the higher beneficiaries from this automated service.

This work is a milestone in our library development. For this work the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia graciously sanctioned $10,000. First of all, the management, staff and students wish to record their heartfelt thanks to the United Board for their help in the development of the College Library.

Today, this is the only college library under the M.S. University that has completed the computerized database for the library books and also introduced automation of the day-to-day works of the library.
