DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

     The Department of Zoology was started in 1927 when the subject was taught to the intermediate classes. Rev. Fr. Foreau S.J., was the first lecturer and Mr.Krishnasamy Iyengar assisted him.

B. Sc. and M.Sc courses were started in 1957 and 1979 respectively. The department was recognized as a research department in 1985 and from 1986 M.Phil course is being offered. There are six research units in the department. The department was recognized as DST sponsored in 2004

The B.Sc Programme of the department provides a sound foundation in the fundamental concepts of various branches of zoology. Courses in Invertebrata, Chordata, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Physiology, Ecology, Genetics, Aquaculture, Molecular Biology, Introduction to Computer, Microbiology, Elementary Pharmacology, Evolution and Developmental Biology are offered

The Master’s Programme provides in-depth study in Biotechnology, Techniques in Biology, Environmental Biology and Biodiversity, Entomology, Microbiology, Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, Physiology and Developmental Biology. Aquaculture and Entomology are offered as optional subjects. The curriculum also includes a dissertation work. The M.Phil programme has two streams, one offering specialization in Aquaculture Biotechnology and the other in Entomology.

Dr.M.A. Haniffa is the Director for the Centre for Aquaculture Research and Extension. Dr.B. Victor is the Director of the Animal Health Research Unit. Dr.T.A. SethuRamalingam is the Director of Centre for Aquafeed and Nutrition. Dr.M. Narayanan is the Director of Aquatic Biodiversity Centre. Dr.M. Dunston P. Ambrose is the Director of Entomology Research Unit. Dr.K. Sahayaraj is the Director of Crop Protection Research and Extension

The following eminent professors headed the department: Prof. Lazarus(1958-59), Prof.S.Raman(1960-1961), Prof.M.V. Rajendran(1962-74), Prof.S. Selvarathinam(1974-87) and Rev.Fr. Stephen De Souza,S.J.(1987-1996). From 1996, Prof.M. Thomas Punithan heads the department.
