HISTORY OF PHYSICAL
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Education of the whole person implies physical development in harmony with
other aspects of the educational processes. Education in this college
includes a well-developed programme of sports and games. In addition to
strengthening the body sports programmes help the students learn to accept
both success and failure graciously.
The games were started in the college with the academic programme as
recreation and relaxation for the students. Dedicated Reverend Fathers and
the enthusiastic staff members trained the college students for various
inter collegiate competitions.
Mr. D.S. Anthonymuthu served this institution as the first physical director
of this college. The college was affiliated to the University of Madras,
Madras. He set the base for the greater glory and new heights that we
achieve. Football, volleyball, hockey and athletics were prominent in those
days and the college fielded the teams in the inter collegiate matches and
brought laurels to the college. They traveled far and wide to play the
matches in the inter collegiate, inter divisional and university matches.
The impact was such the college became familiar in hockey and volleyball in
the fifties.
Major S. Benedict served the institution as the second physical director of
this college from 1960. He consolidated the existing base in sports. Many
dignitaries, who hold high position in most of the institutions and banks
were, learned the skills and ability in mastery of playing hockey and
volleyball from him. In his tenure the college won many university titles in
hockey, football, volleyball and athletics. This college won the
much-coveted Pentuland shield in hockey for 14 times and the shield is
decorating the college permanently.
The college dominated in the open inter collegiate tournaments in Tamilnadu
and Kerala in hockey and volleyball.
In 1971the college hosted the All India Inter University Hockey matches in
the Stadium grounds of the college. To accommodate the hockey audience of
palyamkottai two large galleries were constructed. When the college shifted
its affiliation to the newly formed Madurai Kamaraj University, it played
and healthier and stealer role for the development sports in the university.
Many players of the college represented the university in various games.
Even now Madurai Kamaraj dominates in Hockey, because they learned the trade
from this college.
His place was taken by Dr. A. Laurence Selvaraj in 1988. The same sports
tempo left by his predecessor is being followed by him. In 1989 the college
created a record by winning the Bertram Shield in Volleyball three years
consecutively. It was rare distingshion to achieve that the college won the
most of the inter collegiate and open tournaments to its pocket.. In 1991
the college won the Dr. M. Vartharasanar trophy for contributing the most
number of university players to the univeristy teams for the first time.
In 1991 the college was affiliated to the newly formed Manonmanium
Sundaranar University.
The college has its flag fluttering high in the university in various
games. In most of the teams sent by the university or the district
associations the sportsmen of the college are seen. In the late eighties
and the early nineties there were three concrete basketball courts were laid
for the development of the college basketball team.
In 1995, when M.S. Uiversity conducted the All India Inter university
Cricket Tournament the college stadium was one of the venues for the
matches. When the college celebrated the Platinum Jubilee, It started
conducting state level inter Collegiate tournaments in volleyball,
Basketball and Hockey.
G. Benedict Starli won the Gold in High Jump in the 14th Faker
Indoor International meet at Iran.
The college Football team is the champions club of the District and it is
being invited for the past by the Tamilnadu Football Association for the
Champion club tournament conducted by it. In the Year 2002 the department is
housed in new two
storeyed building in the
stadium, inclusive of some rooms for accommodation of the players
St. Xavier’s Will be synonymous with sports. The college has conducted many
coaching camps for the university and district players by the university and
the association.
Academic Programmes
Coaching camps in various games are conducted in the beginning of the
academic year. Inter department competitions are conducted in various games
for the students of the college. Sports day is conducted, every year in a
grand manner. when ever the University or the District associations request
the college for the conduct of any coaching camps, such programmes or
conducted by the college.
