Department of Library
The College Library came into existence with the college in 1923. The first library was in a small room No.10 in the main building. In 1956 when the Lebeau Auditorium was built, the western end of the ground flour was added to library block to be used as reading room, the Eastern end room for being used for a class. Later, a small block of two rooms to house the library was built at the site where auditorium stands, the entire ground flour came to be used by the library department. The number of volumes as on date is 74,300. This year (May 2005) the new Library building constructed at a cost of more than Rs. One crore has been dedicated to the students and staff of the college.
Now the library has very good collections in the fields of English and Tamil Literature. Some of them are out of print at present. Though these books are reaching the stage of ‘fossils’, these books are still kept in the library. Our library has a good number of reference books like,
It is a state of the art, high-tech library building complete with a language lab, internet and intranet facilities and a lift(elevator). It has a built-in space of 25000 ft and 3 floors including a mezzanine.

METHOD OF SCHEME OF CLASIFICATION IN OUR LIBRARY
The College Library adopted the Internationals Decimal classification system. In this system the whole field of human knowledge has been methodically arranged under the ten digits, i.e.,
0 – 9, the fundamental divisions being as follows:
0 = General Reference
5 = Natural Sciences
1 = Philosophy
6 = Applied Sciences
2 = Religion
7 = Fine Arts
3 = Social Sciences
8 = Literature
4 = Philology
9 = History and Geography
The divisions and subdivisions of the sections of human knowledge are indicated by the addition of one, two, three, four, or more digits to the right of the fundamental one, always in the decimal order. Thus under 5 (Natural Sciences), 51 stands for Mathematics, 52 for Astronomy, 53 for Physics, 54 for Chemistry, etc. Again, under 8 (Literature), 820 stands for English Literature, 821 for English Poetry, 823 English Fiction, 824 for English Prose. 822.33 for Shakespeare, etc.
Besides this subject-classification number common to all the books of a group, each book is given an ordinal number according to the alphabetical order of the authors’ names in each section. The two numbers together indicate the book required. Authorless books are put at the end of their section. It may be pointed out that an exception is made for Tamil where the Titles are alphabetically arranged.

Library automation
In the year 2001, our college library was modernized with the help of united board (UBACHEA). We really feel very happy to say that St.Xavier’s College library is the only one in our area providing computerized information service to the students and staff. Now the constraints in the library day to day work have been minimized and also the repetition or duplication work avoided.
After this computerization work different kinds of reports can be printed out. Even the list of frequently accessed books during any particular period can be printed out. Finally this work has given high utility of college library for the students and staff. Research scholars are also getting the higher beneficiaries from this automated service.
Today, this is the only college library under the M.S. University that has completed the computerized database for the library books and also introduced automation of the day-to-day works of the library.
